Michael Sfakianakis is Professor of Applied Informatics in Business Administration at the Department of Business Administration, University of Piraeus with a first degree in Mathematics from the University of Athens, a Master in Computer Science and Operations Research, and a Ph.D. in Applied Quantitative Methods. He has authored over than 100 scientific articles-studies in “IEEE Trans. Reliability” (3), “Communications in Statistics: Simulation and Computation”, “Microelectronics and Reliability”, “European Planning Studies”, “Journal of Applied Statistics”, “Risk Management”, “American Journal of Gastroenterology”, “European Journal of Clinical Investigation”, “American Journal of Hypertension”, and the rest in other international journals and conference proceedings.

Teaching 25 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate courses at undergraduate and postgraduate departments of the University of Athens, the Athens University of Economics and Business and the University of Piraeus. He is author of 4 books in the field of Informatics, Analysis and Data Management, Applied Statistics and Forecasting Methodology. Currently teaching in undergraduate as well as in 6 postgraduate programs (4 at the University of Piraeus and 2 at the Athens University of Economics and Business). Referee in 8 international scientific journals and member of the Editorial Review Board of the international journal Advances in Doctoral Research in Management.

Scientific Activities:

  • President of the Central Supervisory Board of the General Commercial Registry from February and up to this day. Under his supervision the One Stop Shop was established (which was Memorandum’s term).
  • Full member of the Independent Public Procurement Authority from May 2012 for a five-year term.
  • Member – upon nomination by the European Commission and in accordance with the Decision, dated 08.11.2005 – of the European Advisory Committee on Statistical Information in the Economic and Social Spheres for a four-year term. Each member state of the European Union was represented by two nominated members and the Committee was chaired by the respective Commissioner (Chairmain of the Committee was Mr. Joaquin Almunia).
  • Member – upon nomination by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development - OECD and in accordance of the Decision, dated 20/1/2009 – of the Coordinating Committee for the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies.
  • President of the Committee for revision of the Consumer Price Index of Greece (National Statistical Service of Greece) with 2005 as the base year.
  • Vice-president of the Board of Directors of Electronic Governance of Social Security (ΙDIKA) SA for the period February 2008 - August 2010.
  • Ordinary Member of the Advisory Council of Consumers Price Index of Greece (National Statistical Service of Greece) for the period 2004–2010.

  • President of the Central Supervisory Board of the General Commercial Registry from February and up to this day. Under his supervision the One Stop Shop was established (which was Memorandum’s term).
  • Full member of the Independent Public Procurement Authority from May 2012 for a five-year term.
  • Member – upon nomination by the European Commission and in accordance with the Decision, dated 08.11.2005 – of the European Advisory Committee on Statistical Information in the Economic and Social Spheres for a four-year term. Each member state of the European Union was represented by two nominated members and the Committee was chaired by the respective Commissioner (Chairmain of the Committee was Mr. Joaquin Almunia).
  • Member – upon nomination by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development - OECD and in accordance of the Decision, dated 20/1/2009 – of the Coordinating Committee for the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies.
  • President of the Committee for revision of the Consumer Price Index of Greece (National Statistical Service of Greece) with 2005 as the base year.
  • Vice-president of the Board of Directors of Electronic Governance of Social Security (ΙDIKA) SA for the period February 2008 - August 2010.
  • Ordinary Member of the Advisory Council of Consumers Price Index of Greece (National Statistical Service of Greece) for the period 2004–2010.

  • Ordinary member of the Evaluation Committee of the Open Contest for the project "Creation and Management of the Portal of the Department of Health and Social Solidarity". Also, an ordinary member of the Evaluation Committee of the Open Contest for the project "Development of Operational Solution and Central IT Infrastructure for the Integrated Information System Auditing Services" on behalf of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
  • Head of Statistics in the working group regarding quality assurance of the system of administration and audit of the Third Community Support Framework, with main object of activity the analysis and evaluation of results of audits, and particularly the statistical process of irregularities regarding the determination of their frequency and significance.
  • Scientific Consultant of the Greek Observatory for the Information Society and author of the RFP (Request For Proposal) of the study for measuring e-Europe indicators which was implemented in 2005. Implementation Consultant (from 2005 and up to this day) of this study that has since been repeated annually.
  • Head in an economic technical working group for a research - study assigned by the Ministry of National Economy to the Centre of Planning and Economic Research with the subject: ‘’Industrial Restructuring and Employment‘’ in the field of productivity analysis (jointly with N. Vagionis), and finding of an ‘’early warning system‘’ (by use of discriminant analysis) for timely forecasting of problematic situations in enterprises and in industry. The above study was presented in three successive sessions of the Council of Economic Experts.
  • Assignment upon invitation to tender (jointly with 4 researchers of the Athens University of Economics and Business, the University of Crete, and the Centre of Planning and Economic Research) of the research and writing of a book edited by the National Bank of Greece and the Centre of Planning and Economic Research in 2007. Title of the assigned work: ‘’Resources of Economic History of Modern Greece: quantitative data and statistical series, 1830 – 1939‘’.
